I cringe when I hear people tell me they could whip up a good logo in a couple of minutes. No, sir/ma’am it takes way longer than that. A lot goes into creating a logo, and sometimes clients don’t fully understand that. A clean and beautiful logo takes time and has a process…and here it is:
Communication
As in all business and life transactions, communication is key. You want to make your client happy and they want to be happy – so make sure you talk about all of their wants and needs for their logo. I use a branding board when interacting with clients. This board gives me and the client something to look at to brainstorm and talk about what does and doesn’t work in the logo. (Link to my branding board at the end of the post)
Having all of your design ideas in one place makes it easier to focus on the important elements of the design and what the client specifically wants in their design.
Research
Once you have all of your details for the project its time to do a little research. Browse logos of other businesses similar to your client’s to make sure your client’s logo will stand out amongst the crowd.
Sketch
Sketch out your design ideas. I like to get several sketches done before settling on designs to move forward with.
Revisions
Revise the logos and make sure that everything is cleaned up and ready to present. I like to revise and, if time allows, wait about half an hour to look at it again to make sure that everything is as it should be.
Presentation + Delivery
Create a clean Branding Board or PDF file with the logos you would like to present to your client. Make sure everything is positioned properly and that you’ve included the best of the designs you’ve made. Email the file to your client with a note asking for feedback and giving some detail to the work you have completed.
Follow-up
Often times we don’t remember to follow up with our clients. Establish rapport with your clients.
